THE DYLAN PROJECT is a genuine supergroup. Fronted by the charismatic STEVE GIBBONS (lead vocals, harmonica, guitar) the band also includes Steve’s longtime associate P.J.WRIGHT (lead guitar, pedal steel, dobro, etc.) and three members of FAIRPORT CONVENTION in DAVE PEGG (bass, mandolin, backing vocals), SIMON NICOL (guitar, bass, vocals) and GERRY CONWAY (drums, percussion), along with Simon Nicol’s replacement, new recruit PHIL BOND (keyboards).

This CD, as they say, does what it says on the label. RGF Records has acquired the rights to this second studio album, originally titled ‘DYLAN PROJECT 2’ when it was released on Fairport’s Matty Grooves label in 2005. This reissued version features five previously unreleased bonus tracks, all but one recorded in 2010, plus, as on the previous RGF release, an explanatory sleeve note by Dylan expert (and Rod Argent lookalike) Ray Dobson.

As suggested by the title, THE DYLAN PROJECT interprets the songs of BOB DYLAN, arguably the most influential singer/songwriter since World War II. THE DYLAN PROJECT came about when STEVE GIBBONS and DAVE PEGG, who are both from Birmingham and first met when both were members in the 1960s of The Uglys, performed at an Uglys reunion gig, and discussed ideas for future projects.

Reviewing the previous double CD by THE DYLAN PROJECT (still available as RGF/DPDCD 066), Alan Clayson in ‘Record Collector’ called it “a heartfelt and thoroughly engrossing tribute” and described STEVE GIBBONS as “one of the planet’s most inspired Dylan interpreters”.
